Ella Maisy Purvis’s performance is central to this success. First diagnosed with autism in her late teens, Purvis stars in her first lead role and delivers a portrayal that feels controlled but never cold, capturing both Patience’s internal intensity and her vulnerability in social spaces. The contrast between York’s grand exteriors and the more controlled, often claustrophobic interiors mirrors Patience’s inner world—structured, contained, yet full of depth. Crucially, the character is not defined solely by autism; instead, it informs how she navigates the world, how she copes with disruption, and how deeply she commits to the puzzles that fascinate her. The series avoids sentimentality, allowing moments of discomfort, resilience, and quiet humour to coexist naturally. The crimes themselves are thoughtfully constructed, favouring intellectual engagement over spectacle.
As the show progresses into its second series, it takes a confident risk by disrupting the stability it has created. The departure of Metcalf and the arrival of Detective Inspector Frankie Monroe introduces a sharper, more abrasive dynamic. Jessica Hynes (The Royle Family) plays Monroe as a deliberate counterpoint: pragmatic, brusque, and initially dismissive of Patience’s unconventional contributions. This shift injects tension into the series and prevents it from becoming complacent. Where earlier episodes focused on recognition, the newer chapters explore what it means to have that recognition withdrawn—and how hard-won confidence can change the way rejection is faced.
This evolving relationship is one of the show’s most compelling arcs. Romance also blossoms in the second season as Patience tentatively explores a romantic connection with her colleague Elliot (Tom Lewis – Gentleman Jack). Alongside this, the department adjusts to other internal changes brought about by a newly appointed PR consultant (Rhiannon Clements – Vera), even as the team continues to unravel complex cases set against striking backdrops. Familiar faces return across the ensemble, Mark Benton (Waterloo Road) portrays DCI Calvin Baxter, the senior officer who oversees the investigative team, with Ali Ariaie (The Great) reprising his role as DC Will Akbari, Connor Curren (Dodger) as Billy Thompson and Liza Sadovy (The Rumour) as Dr. Loretta Parsons, each continuing to add depth to the evolving world of the series.
As an adaptation of the Franco-Belgian series Astrid et Raphaëlle (2019 to present), which aired in the United Kingdom as Astrid: Murder in Paris, the series respects its source material while carving out its own tone. The British version leans more heavily into emotional realism and workplace dynamics, giving the story a distinct rhythm that feels attuned to its setting and characters. It also joins a growing lineage of crime dramas featuring neurodivergent protagonists but stands apart by making collaboration—not isolation—the key to its storytelling.
Ultimately, Patience is a drama about being seen. It argues, quietly but firmly, that different ways of thinking are not obstacles to justice but essential tools in its pursuit. With a third series commissioned and its audience steadily growing (becoming the 8th most streamed show across all platforms midway through its second season run), the show has proven that subtlety, care, and character-led storytelling still have a powerful place in modern television.
