Chorlton and the Wheelies

Chorlton and the Wheelies

1976 - United Kingdom

Chorlton and the Wheelies is a wonderfully strange slice of 1970s British children's television that blends whimsy, weirdness, and warmth in equal measure. Created by Cosgrove Hall for Thames Television, this puppet-based stop-motion series introduces a funny and zany cast of characters in a world unlike any other.

Set in Wheelie World, the show follows Chorlton, a cheerful "happiness dragon" who, along with his companions the Wheelies—small, wheeled characters—works to spread joy and optimism. Together, they stand against the wicked schemes of Fenella the Kettle Witch, who is determined to keep the land shrouded in gloom and sadness.

Chorlton's charm lies in his innocence and irrepressible cheerfulness, which repeatedly thwarts Fenella’s dark magic. His name comes from the label “Made in Chorlton-cum-Hardy” found inside his egg—an affectionate nod to the show's production studio, located in that very part of Manchester.

The show’s offbeat animation, surreal setting, and eccentric humor give it a dreamlike quality. The voice acting, particularly Fenella’s exaggerated Welsh accent, adds a memorable touch. Though visually modest by today’s standards, Chorlton and the Wheelies remains a cult favorite for its inventiveness and heart.
