Fallen Hero

Fallen Hero

1978 United Kingdom

Fallen Hero is a gritty, character-driven British drama from Granada that aired on ITV between 1978 and 1979, and remains a quietly powerful portrait of pride, loss and reinvention. Centred on rugby league star Gareth Hopkins, played with bruised intensity by Del Henney (Straw Dogs), the series explores what happens when public adulation vanishes overnight.

Gareth’s career ends abruptly after a serious knee injury sustained under the floodlights, forcing him to confront a life stripped of purpose and status. His marriage to Dorothy (Wanda Ventham – The Lotus Eaters) collapses soon after, leaving him to raise their baby daughter alone. Returning to his native Wales, Gareth is met not with comfort but resentment: his fiercely nationalist father views him as a prodigal son for abandoning rugby union and local loyalty in favour of league and money in the north. The contrast with his brother, now poised to achieve the career Gareth rejected, sharpens the sense of regret that hangs over the story.

Fallen Hero

The first series focuses on Gareth’s struggle to rebuild—financially, emotionally, and morally—while trying to repair those fractured family ties and rediscover his self-respect. The second series moves the story on, revealing a man whose fortunes appear to be improving. A family legacy allows Gareth to buy a beautiful home, and his former club invites him back, this time in a directorial role, offering the possibility of renewed purpose and belonging. He also begins a relationship with Rebecca (Prunella Gee - Coronation Street), a sleek, cool and alluring presence who seems to embody a fresh start. Yet this newfound stability proves fragile: beneath the surface, Gareth remains haunted by unresolved feelings for Dorothy, and gradually realises that despite his apparent success, she is the one thing he truly wants and cannot put out of his mind.

Written by Brian Finch, a former journalist, Fallen Hero feels authentic and unsentimental, particularly in its depiction of working-class life, masculine identity, and the cost of ambition. The performances are uniformly strong, with Henney anchoring the drama and Ventham giving depth to a role that could easily have slipped into cliché. Other actors who appeared in episodes of the series include Barry Stanton (Coronation Street), Tessa Peake-Jones (Only Fools and Horses), John Wheatley (The Bill) and Frank Crompton (Crown Court).

Unapologetically bleak and unmistakably of its time, Fallen Hero may feel dated in places, but its emotional honesty and strong storytelling make it compelling viewing. For fans of tough, realistic British drama (the series was released on DVD by Network and is worth finding as) it’s a neglected gem well worth rediscovering.
